An exciting new, training option for professional rescuers from the
Canadian Red Cross
For more than 50 years, the Canadian Red Cross has been teaching and
certifying health care professionals and the general public on how to
respond to medical emergencies.
We are proud to offer our years of teaching experience to help train
professional rescuers.
First Responder is a comprehensive 44-hour course designed for "first
responders"-those individuals most likely to be the first rescuers on
the scene of an emergency. The program reflects the latest advances in
first aid and CPR. First Responder provides professional rescuers with
the information and skills they need to respond to medical emergencies
with confidence and care.
More than Advanced First Aid
First responders need more than advanced first aid training. They must
also become "critical thinkers" -ready to put their skills into action
at a moment's notice. First Responder course participants will learn
about the following:
- Assessing and securing an emergency scene, making critical
decisions;
- Oxygen administration, airway insertion, breathing devices;
- Baseline vitals, such as blood pressure and pulse rate;
- All levels of basic cardiac life support (CPR);
- Enhanced secondary survey;
- Musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries, burns, heat and cold
emergencies;
- Spinal boards, splints, cervical collars, and other specialized
equipment;
- Moving and transportation skills;
- Emergency childbirth; and
- Assisting when paramedics arrive.
Course Participants Are Motivated to Learn
First Responder keeps course participants involved and motivated to
learn through lectures, discussions, decision-making activities,
hands-on skills practice and videos that feature examples of emergency
situations and step-by-step skill demonstrations. The program is
supported by state-of-the-art training materials, including: a study
manual and workbook, instructor menu; overheads, slides and VHS tapes.
Hands on Practice Sessions Tailored to Your Needs
Participants develop and perfect life saving skills through hands-on
practice sessions with equipment common to most EMS services. You also
have the option of training with the equipment which is available in
your own department.
Flexible Training Modules
First Responder is a modular course, allowing a great deal of scheduling
flexibility. Two of the modules, Oxygen Administration and Preventing
Disease Transmission can be offered as separate, two- to four-hour,
stand-alone courses.
Also available as a stand-alone course is the four- to six-hour
Automated Extemal Defibrillation (AED) program.
Ensure that your first responders are "critical thinkers" with the
skills and confidence to respond to emergencies effectively,
professionally and with care. Offer them Red Cross' First Responder
program.
